Ga NMR study of UGa$$_{3}$$; Antiferromagnetically ordered state

Kambe, Shinsaku; Walstedt, R. E.; Sakai, Hironori; Tokunaga, Yo; Matsuda, Tatsuma; Haga, Yoshinori; Onuki, Yoshichika

Physical Review B, 72(18), p.184437_1 - 184437_8, 2005/11

Times Cited Count:5 Percentile:26.1(Materials Science, Multidisciplinary)

Temperature dependence of the spin-lattice relaxation time ($$T_{1}$$) at Ga site are measured for the paramagnetic and antiferromagnetically (AFM) ordered states of UGa$$_{3}$$($$T_{N}=66K$$). Clear minimaum of $$T_1$$ has been observed at $$sim62K$$ in addition to a minimun at $$T_N$$, indicating that second order phase transtion occures at both temperatures. Based on a comparison between $$T_1$$ of $$^{69}$$Ga and $$^{71}$$Ga nucleai, the enhanced fluctuations at both temparature are magnetic. The origin of the transitions are discussed.

Magnetism of uranium dioxide UO$$_{2}$$ under high pressure

Sakai, Hironori; Kato, Harukazu; Tokunaga, Yo; Kambe, Shinsaku; Walstedt, R. E.; Nakamura, Akio; Tateiwa, Naoyuki*; Kobayashi, Tatsuo*

Journal of Magnetism and Magnetic Materials, 272-276(Suppl.), p.e413 - e414, 2004/05

Times Cited Count:2 Percentile:13.75(Materials Science, Multidisciplinary)

The d.c. magnetization of insulating UO$$_{2}$$ under high pressure up to about 1 GPa has been measured using a piston-cylinder cell. Pressure-induced weak ferromagnetism was found to appear at low pressure (about 0.2 GPa). Both the remanent magnetization and the coercive force increase as pressure increases. This weak ferromagnetism may come from spin canting or from uncompensated moments around grain boundaries.

Single crystal growth and magnetic property of UNiSb$$_2$$

Ikeda, Shugo; Matsuda, Tatsuma; Galatanu, A.; Yamamoto, Etsuji; Haga, Yoshinori; Onuki, Yoshichika

Journal of Magnetism and Magnetic Materials, 272-276(1), p.62 - 63, 2004/05

Times Cited Count:6 Percentile:34.09(Materials Science, Multidisciplinary)

We have succeeded in growing a single crystal of an antiferromagnet UNiSb$$_2$$ by the self-flux method. The magnetic susceptibility is found to be highly anisotropic, reflecting the quasi-two dimensional tetragonal crystal structure. The magnetic easy-axis is determined as the [001] direction, consistent with the result of the neutron scattering experiments.

The electronic structure of spinel-type chalcogenide CuIr$$_{2}$$S$$_{4}$$, which exhibits a metal-insulator transition (MIT) as a function of temperature, has been studied by photoemission spectroscopy (PES). Below the transition temperature $$T_{mathrm{MI}}$$, the valence-band PES spectra indicate a gap formation, while the overall valence-band structure is shifted to the higher binding-energy side. The line shape of the Ir 4${it f}$ core-level PES spectra shows a dramatic change across $$T_{mathrm{MI}}$$, which may be associated with the variation of the Ir 5${it d}$ electron states.

High-quality single crystal growth of UGe$$_2$$ and URhGe

Yamamoto, Etsuji; Haga, Yoshinori; Matsuda, Tatsuma; Ikeda, Shugo; Inada, Yoshihiko*; Settai, Rikio*; Onuki, Yoshichika*

We searched for an experimental condition of crystal growth for a ferromagnetic superconductors of UGe$$_2$$ and URhGe. Samples were prepared for both polycrystalline and single crystals, which were arc-melted and grown by the Czochralski-pulling method in a tetra-arc furnace, respectively. Annealing is an important process to enhance sample-quality, namely the residual resistivity ratio. We tried to anneal the samples under various temperatures, which were wrapped by the Ta-foil and vacuum-sealed in the quartz ample, together with the solid state electrotransport method in ultra-high vacuum. The highest residual resistivity ratio was 900 for UGe$$_2$$ and 41 for URhGe.

Growth-orientation dependence of magnetic properties of Cr-based multilayers with $$^{119}$$Sn monatomioc layers

Jiko, Norihiro*; Almokhtar, M.*; Takeda, Masayasu; Suzuki, Junichi; Shinjo, Teruya*; Mibu, Ko*

Journal of Magnetism and Magnetic Materials, 272-276(Part2), p.1233 - 1234, 2004/05

The growth-orientation dependence of magnetism of Cr/Sn and Fe/Cr/Sn/Cr multilayers was studied. For Fe/Cr/Sn/Cr multilayers, reduction of Cr magnetic moments was found in both (011)- and (001)-orientated samples, and the effect is larger in the former than the latter. In Cr/Sn multilayers, the (011)-oriented sample with the Cr layer thickness (${it t}$$$_{Cr}$$$$geq$$) of 80$AA has a commensurate antiferromagnetic structure, while the (001)-oriented samples with {it t}$$$_{Cr}$$$$geq$$ 80AA have a spin-density-wave structure with the wave vector perpendicular to the film plane.
